American preparing for an English test for Australian skilled migration

English Test Requirements for Americans Applying for an Australia Visa

English test requirements Americans Australia visa applicants need to understand are often misunderstood. If you are a US citizen holding a valid US passport, you can use that passport as evidence of Competent English for relevant Australian skilled migration purposes. You do not necessarily have to sit an English test simply to establish the minimum English level.

But that does not mean an English test is irrelevant.

For points-tested skilled migration, Competent English gives you zero English-language points. Proficient English gives you 10 points and Superior English gives you 20 points.

For an American considering a subclass 189, 190 or 491 visa, sitting an approved English test can therefore be a strategic decision rather than a basic language requirement.

The real question is not:

“Do I speak English?”

It is:

“Would a higher tested-English result materially improve my Australian migration points position?”

Do Americans need an English test for Australian skilled migration?

Not necessarily.

A citizen of the United States who holds a valid US passport can use that passport as evidence of Competent English for relevant Australian visa purposes.

The same passport-based concession applies to citizens holding valid passports from certain other recognised English-speaking countries.

For an American skilled migration applicant, this can mean that you do not need to sit an English test merely to establish Competent English.

However, Competent English is only the minimum English level relevant to the points-tested skilled migration system.

It gives you no additional points for English.

How many points can English provide?

For points-tested skilled migration, the three key English levels are:

This is why English testing can matter even for a native English-speaking American.

If you rely on your US passport, you may satisfy the Competent English requirement but receive no English-language points.

If you sit an approved English test and achieve the required Proficient or Superior scores, your points score can increase substantially.

Twenty additional points can materially change an applicant’s migration position — but it should not be treated as a guarantee of an invitation.

Invitation prospects depend on the visa, occupation, points score, invitation settings and, for the 190 and 491, state or territory nomination requirements.

Is 65 points enough for Australian skilled migration?

The subclass 189, 190 and 491 visas are points-tested visas.

You need to meet or exceed the applicable threshold of 65 points to be considered for invitation.

However, reaching 65 points does not guarantee that you will receive an invitation.

This distinction matters.

An American applicant sitting at 65 points should not assume that technical eligibility means the migration pathway is competitive.

Instead, the points score needs to be assessed in the context of:

What IELTS scores are required?

For IELTS Academic or IELTS General Training, the current thresholds remain straightforward.

For an American skilled migration applicant, the important distinction is that you do not generally need an IELTS 6 in each component if your valid US passport already establishes Competent English.

You would normally sit the test because you are trying to achieve the higher Proficient or Superior level and claim additional points.

Why native English speakers can still struggle with IELTS

An English test does not simply ask whether you speak English naturally.

It tests performance against a defined examination structure.

A native English speaker can communicate perfectly well in everyday life and still lose marks because they misunderstand the assessment format, do not manage time effectively, fail to address a writing task properly or approach reading and listening questions inefficiently.

This is particularly important for applicants targeting Superior English.

An IELTS score of 8 in every component is significantly different from simply being a native speaker.

If you decide that 20 English points are important to your migration strategy, preparation is worthwhile.

What changed to Australian English tests in August 2025?

Australia changed the approved English testing framework on 7 August 2025.

This means applicants need to be careful when comparing current requirements with old migration websites, forum posts, YouTube videos or test-score charts.

For tests taken on or after 7 August 2025, the Department accepts a broader range of approved tests taken in secure testing centres.

These include:

The required scores vary between tests and between Competent, Proficient and Superior English.

Do not assume an old PTE, TOEFL or Cambridge score table is still current. In particular, the PTE Academic scoring requirements changed for tests taken from 7 August 2025.

Can I take an English test online from home?

Generally no, not for Australian visa purposes.

The Department requires approved English tests to be undertaken in a secure testing centre.

Fully online or remote-proctored versions such as IELTS Online, TOEFL iBT Home Edition and other at-home variants are not accepted for Australian visa purposes.

This is worth checking carefully before you book.

What about PTE Academic?

PTE Academic remains an approved English test for Australian migration, but applicants need to be particularly careful with outdated information.

The version of PTE Academic used from 7 August 2025 has different score requirements from the earlier version.

For tests taken on or after 7 August 2025, the minimum scores are component-specific rather than one simple identical number across all four skills.

For example, the current Superior English thresholds for PTE Academic are:

Applicants should therefore check the current Home Affairs requirements rather than relying on historical references to “PTE 79”.

What about TOEFL iBT?

TOEFL iBT is also accepted, subject to the current Department requirements.

For tests taken under the current regime, applicants registering for TOEFL iBT need to select the Australian visa testing pathway required by the Department.

Results from an ineligible TOEFL registration or an at-home version may not be accepted.

What about OET?

OET is particularly relevant to health professionals.

It remains an approved test for Australian migration purposes, but its scoring framework also changed from 7 August 2025.

Healthcare professionals should be careful not to rely on older letter-grade references without checking how the current numerical OET scores apply to the English level they need.

How long are English test results valid?

English test validity depends on the visa and the particular requirement being satisfied.

For Competent, Proficient and Superior English, Home Affairs generally refers to test results achieved within the relevant three-year period, subject to the requirements of the visa subclass.

Tests taken on or before 6 August 2025 may continue to be accepted during transitional periods where the relevant visa requirements allow it.

This means timing matters.

You do not want to sit a test years before you know whether you have a viable skilled migration pathway, but you also do not want English testing to become the final issue delaying an otherwise ready Expression of Interest.

When should an American sit the English test?

I normally prefer to understand the applicant’s overall migration position first.

A sensible sequence is often:

  1. identify the correct skilled occupation;
  2. determine whether a positive skills assessment is realistic;
  3. calculate the applicant’s baseline points score;
  4. assess 189, 190 and 491 prospects;
  5. determine whether 10 or 20 additional English points would materially improve the strategy;
  6. then sit the appropriate approved test with a specific target score.

This is very different from simply telling every American applicant to book an English test immediately.

Should every American target Superior English?

Not necessarily.

Superior English is valuable because it gives 20 points.

But whether it is worth the time, cost and preparation depends on the applicant.

For example, an applicant may already have a strong points position and a realistic nomination pathway at Proficient English.

Another applicant may need all 20 points simply to become competitive.

And another may have such a weak pathway for other reasons that spending months repeatedly sitting English tests will not solve the underlying problem.

English should therefore form part of an overall visa strategy.

What if I achieve Proficient English but not Superior?

Proficient English can still be valuable.

Ten additional points may improve an applicant’s position substantially.

If you are targeting Superior English but achieve only the Proficient threshold, the question becomes whether the additional potential 10 points justify another attempt.

That decision should be made against your actual points position and migration prospects rather than automatically booking repeated tests.

Can I update my EOI after improving my English score?

Yes, an Expression of Interest can generally be updated before an invitation is issued where circumstances change.

That can include improved English proficiency.

If a new English result increases your points score, the EOI should be updated accurately so that your current claims are reflected in SkillSelect.

The real advantage for American applicants

The advantage for an American is not that the English test is automatically easy.

The advantage is that a valid US passport can already provide the Competent English foundation.

You can then make a strategic decision about whether testing is worthwhile for additional points.

That gives you a degree of flexibility:

The mistake is not relying on your US passport.

The mistake is relying on it without first calculating what the additional English points could mean for your migration strategy.

How Simon Mander Consulting can help

I assess English testing as one component of the overall skilled migration strategy.

For an American applicant, that includes considering:

The objective is not simply to maximise a Rank Math-style points total on paper. It is to determine whether those additional points materially improve a real migration pathway.

Frequently asked questions

Do Americans need to sit an English test for Australian skilled migration?

Not necessarily. A US citizen holding a valid US passport can use that passport as evidence of Competent English for relevant Australian migration purposes. However, an approved English test is required if the applicant wants to claim points for Proficient or Superior English.

How many English points can an American claim?

Competent English attracts 0 points, Proficient English 10 points and Superior English 20 points. A US passport can establish Competent English, but higher points require the relevant approved test results.

What IELTS score gives 20 points for Australian skilled migration?

Superior English requires at least IELTS 8 in each of Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking.

What IELTS score gives 10 points?

Proficient English requires at least IELTS 7 in each of Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking.

Can I use PTE Academic for Australian migration?

Yes. PTE Academic remains an approved test, but the scoring requirements changed for tests taken on or after 7 August 2025. Applicants should use the current component-specific Home Affairs requirements rather than older PTE score tables.

Can I take an English test online at home?

Generally no. Home Affairs requires approved English tests for visa purposes to be taken in a secure testing centre and does not accept specified fully online or at-home versions.

Is 65 points enough to receive a skilled migration invitation?

65 points is the minimum threshold for the points-tested 189, 190 and 491 visas, but reaching the minimum does not guarantee an invitation.

Should every American try to achieve Superior English?

Not automatically. Superior English provides 20 points and can be extremely valuable, but whether another test attempt is worthwhile depends on the applicant’s overall points position, occupation and migration strategy.
