Working Holiday Visa Australia
The Working Holiday visa allows eligible young travellers to visit Australia while undertaking short-term work to help fund their stay.
Australia has two main work and travel visa pathways: the 417 visa and the 462 visa. The correct visa depends on your passport country, age, education, English ability and other eligibility requirements.
This page provides a simple overview of how the work and travel visa options operate and where they fit within Australia’s broader visa system.
Working Holiday Visa and Work and Holiday Visa
Australia’s work and travel visa program includes two main subclasses:
- 417 visa: Working Holiday visa
- 462 visa: Work and Holiday visa
Both visas allow eligible applicants to travel in Australia and undertake short-term work. However, the eligibility rules are different.
417 Visa
The 417 visa is available to passport holders from certain eligible countries.
Applicants must usually meet age, health, character and passport requirements. Some passport holders may have different age limits depending on their country of citizenship.
462 Visa
The 462 visa is available to passport holders from a different group of eligible countries.
This visa may involve additional requirements, including education, English language evidence or government support depending on the applicant’s passport country.
Common Requirements
Depending on the visa subclass and passport country, applicants may need to show:
- eligible age
- eligible passport
- health and character compliance
- sufficient funds
- education evidence, if required
- English evidence, if required
- supporting documents requested for the visa subclass
Can a Working Holiday Visa Lead to Permanent Residency?
A Working Holiday visa is not itself a permanent residency visa.
However, some people later explore other pathways after gaining Australian work experience or building connections in Australia.
Possible future pathways may include skilled migration, employer sponsorship or partner visa options, depending on the person’s circumstances.

Important Practical Point
Work and travel visas are designed for temporary stays. They should not be confused with skilled migration or employer-sponsored permanent pathways.
If your long-term goal is to live in Australia permanently, it is important to assess your broader migration options rather than relying only on a temporary work and travel visa.
