482 Visa Australia
The 482 visa allows eligible Australian employers to sponsor overseas workers for genuine skilled positions.
The Subclass 482 visa is one of Australia’s main employer-sponsored visa pathways. It allows skilled workers to live and work in Australia for an approved sponsoring employer.
However, employer sponsorship is not simply a matter of finding a job. The employer, the position and the applicant must all meet specific requirements under Australian migration law.
The biggest mistake applicants make is treating the 482 visa like a general work visa. It is not. A 482 visa requires a genuine Australian employer willing and able to sponsor the applicant in an eligible skilled role.
Simon Mander is a Registered Migration Agent (MARN 0318058) with over 23 years of experience assisting employers and skilled workers with employer-sponsored visa strategy, eligibility assessment and application preparation.
If you already have an Australian employer or a serious sponsorship opportunity, the next step is to assess whether the employer, position and applicant all meet the requirements.
What Is the 482 Visa?
The Subclass 482 visa is an employer-sponsored visa that allows approved Australian businesses to sponsor overseas workers where suitable local workers cannot be sourced.
The visa is commonly used across industries experiencing skill shortages, including healthcare, engineering, trades, construction, hospitality, education and information technology.
The 482 visa may also create a pathway toward permanent residency in some circumstances, commonly through the subclass 186 visa.
How Employer Sponsorship Works
The 482 visa process generally involves three separate stages:
- the employer becomes or remains an approved sponsor
- the employer lodges a nomination for a genuine skilled position
- the visa applicant lodges the visa application
Each stage has separate legal requirements and evidence obligations.
Errors at any stage can lead to refusal. A strong applicant cannot fix a weak employer nomination, and a willing employer cannot fix an applicant who does not meet the visa requirements.
Basic 482 Visa Requirements
Genuine Skilled Position
The sponsoring employer must demonstrate that the nominated role is genuine and consistent with the business’s operational needs.
Relevant Skills and Experience
The applicant must generally demonstrate relevant qualifications and employment experience connected to the nominated occupation.
In many cases, at least two years of relevant employment experience is expected.
English Requirements
Applicants usually need to satisfy English language requirements unless an exemption applies.
Health and Character Requirements
Applicants and any dependent family members must generally satisfy Australian health and character requirements.
Salary Requirements
The nominated salary must usually meet applicable migration salary requirements and be consistent with Australian market rates.
482 Visa Streams
Core Skills Stream
The Core Skills stream is the main employer-sponsored pathway for many skilled workers where the occupation, salary and position meet the relevant requirements.
Specialist Skills Stream
The Specialist Skills stream may be available for highly paid specialist roles that meet the relevant salary and occupation requirements.
Labour Agreement Stream
The Labour Agreement stream applies where an employer operates under an approved labour agreement with the Australian Government.
This may include DAMA arrangements in some regional areas and industries.

Can a 482 Visa Lead to Permanent Residency?
In some cases, the 482 visa can create a pathway toward permanent residency.
One common pathway involves the 186 visa, although eligibility depends on factors such as occupation, employer eligibility, employment history, salary, visa stream and timing.
This is where people often get the strategy wrong. A 482 visa is not automatically a permanent residency pathway. The future PR strategy must be assessed before assuming the temporary visa will lead anywhere.

Do You Need a Skills Assessment?
Not all 482 visa applicants require a formal skills assessment.
However, some occupations and passport holders may require one as part of the application process.
Even where a formal skills assessment is not mandatory, strong evidence of qualifications and employment experience is still essential.
A weak evidence profile can create serious problems even where the applicant has genuine experience.
Can You Change Employers on a 482 Visa?
A 482 visa holder cannot simply move to a new employer without further migration steps.
If employment changes, a new sponsoring employer may need to lodge a fresh nomination and satisfy sponsorship requirements before the visa holder can lawfully work in the new position.
This is an area where many visa holders make mistakes after employment ends unexpectedly.
Common Reasons 482 Visas Are Refused
Common refusal issues include:
- the position is not considered genuine
- the business cannot properly support the nominated role
- the applicant’s experience does not align with the nominated occupation
- salary concerns
- inconsistent employment evidence
- incorrect documentation
- English requirement problems
- health or character concerns
Careful preparation and accurate evidence are essential. Employer sponsorship matters are not forgiving when the role, business or applicant evidence does not line up properly.
Important Strategic Reality
The 482 visa is not a general pathway for people who simply want to work in Australia.
An employer must already be willing to sponsor the applicant for a genuine skilled role.
Employer sponsorship should not be confused with independent skilled migration pathways. If you do not have an Australian employer, you may need to consider skilled migration instead.
